A Full Lap of Tasmania

Tasmania is Australia’s best-kept secret. This island state is surrounded by stunning turquoise waters and nestled among rugged mountains and wild forests. With over 40 percent of Tasmania consisting of protected national parks, reserves, and World Heritage wilderness, this is a truly wild and wonderful part of Australia to explore in a campervan.

To help you get the most out of your driving holiday in Tasmania, we have created the ultimate 8-day self-drive tour itinerary.

Day 1: Hobart to Queenstown – Tasmanian Wilderness Immersion

Ditch the city vibes and dive straight into Tasmania’s rugged beauty. First stop: Russell Falls in Mount Field National Park – a rainforest paradise. Next up, it’s a hike to the serene Lake St Clair (pack a picnic!). As you wind your way through the wild landscapes, the Franklin River’s unique hues will blow your mind. Take a short detour to Nelson Falls before hitting the quirky mining town of Queenstown.

Day 2: Gordon River Cruise & Tullah – Convict History & Mountain Views

Hop on a Gordon River cruise for a day packed with adventure. You’ll explore ancient rainforests, learn about the chilling past of Sarah Island (Australia’s harshest penal colony), and cruise through the dramatic Hells Gates. Keep an eye out for local wildlife! Finish the day with a scenic drive to Tullah, where you can soak in epic mountain views.

Start the day with a refreshing dip at Waratah Falls before venturing through the stunning Hellyer Gorge. Stanley’s “The Nut” is a must-climb for panoramic coastal views. Push on to the remote Arthur River, where you’ll experience the raw beauty of the Tarkine coast and learn about its Aboriginal significance.

Stay: Dispersed camping along the Tarkine Drive is perfect for the adventurous (check regulations and be self-sufficient).

Then, hit the coast, hopping between picturesque seaside towns like Boat Harbour and Penguin (yes, it’s named after the adorable birds!).

Stay: Discovery Parks – Devonport for a budget-friendly cabin or campsite.

Day 5: Cradle Mountain to Launceston – Alpine Adventures & Street Art

Cradle Mountain is a hiker’s paradise! Lace up your boots and explore the alpine trails, keeping an eye out for wombats. Don’t miss the Dove Lake Circuit – it’s iconic for a reason. On the way to Launceston, stop in Sheffield, a town renowned for its colorful murals.
